The Professional Perioperative Scrub RN administers professional nursing services in caring for injured or ill
patients, based upon the age of the individual served. Patients served may include: Infants – newborn to 2
years of age; Pediatric – 2 to 10 years of age; Pediatric/Young Adult – 10 to 18 years of age; Adult – 18 to 65
years of age; Geriatric – over 65 years of age. The RN provides bedside nursing services following guidelines
established in the Nurse Practice Act under the provisions of Act. No. 149 of the Public Acts of 1967.
“Practice of Professional Nursing” means the performance for compensation of any act requiring substantial
specialized judgment and skill founded on formal education which provides knowledge and application of
principles of nursing based on biological, physical and social services; in care, counsel, treatment or
observation of the ill, injured or inform; or for the maintenance of health or the prevention of illness of others
based upon the age of the patient served. This includes the supervision directing or teaching of less skilled
personnel in the carrying out of delegated nursing activities.
The Scrub RN observes and documents response to therapy which includes biopsychosocial responses. The
RN documents care given to the patients and observed responded to that care. The Scrub RN abides by the
American Nurses Association (ANA) code of ethics. The Scrub RN coordinates, implements and supervises
direct nursing care and related activity in the Operating Room, Recovery Room, Endoscopy, Chemotherapy,
Minor procedures, Transfusion and integrated areas. The Scrub RN delegates activities appropriately to
ancillary nursing personnel. The Scrub RN is responsible for the assessment, plan of care,
implementation/intervention and continued monitoring of the perioperative patient.


Perioperative RN Supervisor/ED Supervisor


  • Must have graduated from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Must maintain current licensure for professional nursing practice in the State of Michigan.
  • Must be BLS certified every 2 years according to Michigan Heart Association guidelines. ACLS and PALS
    certification required within 6 months of employment.
  • A minimum of 1 year of nursing experience in an acute care facility required.
  • A minimum of 2 years previous scrub nurse experience preferred.
  • Must maintain Chemotherapy certification or be certified within 6 months.
  • Demonstrates stress management by remaining composed during critical situations.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in administration of quality nursing care to perioperative, post-anesthesia care, endoscopic, chemotherapy, ambulatory care, emergency department and all other patients.
  • Demonstrates personal acceptance of responsibility and accountability for self.
  • Demonstrates use of rehabilitative-restorative nursing techniques appropriate to the need of the patient.
  • Promotes positive interpersonal relationships with staff members, administrators, physicians and the public.
  • Accepts assigned duties within his/her knowledge, experience and educational training.
  • Maintains confidentiality concerning the patient and family, staff members, administration and physicians.


  • Assesses patients by using clinical knowledge and implementation of the nursing process through documentation of patient assessment plan of action, implementation of nursing plan and evaluation of patient response to plan.
  • Identifies perioperative patient problems and devises a nursing care plan to meet the needs of the patient based upon the individual’s age.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize problems and devises nursing care based on the nursing care plan and patient acuity level.
  • Delegates shared aspects of care with select members of the nursing team caring for the patient.
  • Demonstrates ability to coordinate the activities of team members.
  • Evaluates and documents patients response to plan of care.
  • Coordinates non-nursing disciplines to implement individualized plan of care.
  • Notifies the surgeon, family physician and/or anesthesia concerning patient status changes and implements any orders received.
  • Incorporates a discharge plan and instructions for outpatients.
  • Teaches family and patient individual needs.
  • Cross-trains with other positions in the department.
  • Works in Emergency Department as needed.
  • Circulates in OR on an as needed basis.
  • Responsible for pulling all supplies for OR cases.
  • Assists and turns cases over.
  • Takes emergency call on a rotating basis.
  • Prepares the operating room and sets up for all cases. Sets instruments, helps straighten patients, hands instruments, sutures and sponges to physicians as needed. Takes down, set up and prepares for the next case.
  • Washes instruments sets them up and autoclaves them. Maintains all supplies in the operating room. Cares for all instruments; lubricates and sends in for repairs. Insures that surgery is cleaned and set up at the end of the day.
  • Orders all supplies as needed.
  • Autoclaves all outdated supplies monthly.
  • Helps in Central Supply and Emergency as needed.
  • Keeps card file on procedures up to date.
  • Checks supplies, restocks and sets up department.
  • Cleans, packages and sterilizes instruments.
  • Performs departmental storage cleaning and stocking weekly as needed.
  • Completes and documents sterilizer and dishwasher tests.
  • May administers comprehensive intravenous therapy including, but not limited to, blood and blood products, chemotherapy, etc .
  • Monitors eye wash stations.
  • Is Responsible for documentation of daily logs and for submitting daily charge codes.
  • Is responsible for communication with purchasing to purchase new supplies.
  • Maintains a patient advocacy assuring the compliance with patient rights.
  • Reviews physician orders and insures appropriate integration with the patient’s plan of care.
  • May assist in writing policies.
  • Communicates rationale for physician and nursing interventions to the patient and/or family.
  • Is aware of the importance of communication to other staff members.
  • Maintains a safe environment for the patient.
  • Assists with staff orientation programs.
  • Is professional at all times.
  • Discusses work related problems and offers suggestions for change.
  • Maintains department confidentiality with other staff to promote a cooperative working atmosphere.
  • Will be cross-trained to identify positions intra-departmentally. They will include, but not limited to, Perioperative Services, Emergency Department Nurse, Clinical and Central supply responsibilities.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of problems and interdepartmental activities that have come up.
  • Shares communication from physicians and staff as appropriate.
  • Implements schedules according to department requirements.
  • Assists with assigning aspects of department if needed.
  • Keeps open communication with other departments, nursing and non-nursing for coordinating patient care.
  • Demonstrates, by successful completion, ability to effectively implement physician orders affecting patients plan of care.
  • Integrates the medical care plan with the nursing care plan.
  • Cleans and processes cystoscope and endoscopes.
  • Notifies the physician of change in patient status and documents the same.
  • Maintains an active patient advocacy program designed to integrate medical and nursing care plans for optimal intervention of individual patient needs.
  • Complies with HIPAA requirements for security and confidentiality.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of BCMH Corporate Compliance Plan, Code of Conduct and reporting process of any compliance concerns.
  • Shall be responsible for completing educational requirements.
  • Observes all infection control and safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
