The Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)  performs various tests and procedures in those specialties in which he/she is qualified by education, training and experience to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.  The MT / MLT is involved in specimen procurement.  He/she applies techniques used in the fields of Hematology, Coagulation, Chemistry, Microbiology, Serology and Blood Banking to obtain patient results.  The MT / MLT reports results and maintains retrievable records of patient results.  He/she follows quality control procedures to assure the quality of patient results.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess current MT (AMT), MT (ASCP) or CLS (NCA) registration.
  • No experience other than college training is necessary.
  • Six weeks of on the job orientation will be provided.
  • Must understand the use and limitations of laboratory equipment and apparatus, and is familiar with standard laboratory methods and techniques.
  • Should have basic knowledge of various fields of specialty laboratory work and be capable of processing, typing, storing and testing blood.
  • Should be able to work under a great deal of stress.

POSITION DUTIES:  ESSENTIAL

  • Is responsible for accuracy of examinations and analysis to assist physicians to make correct diagnosis of patient’s disease based upon the age of the individual served.
  • Is responsible for careful handling of infectious material to protect all laboratory personnel.
  • Collects specimens under aseptic conditions; accurately records test results.
  • Is responsible for care of expensive scientific  laboratory instruments and judicious use of materials.
  • This job may require the employee to be responsible for the assessment, treatment and/or care of all age groups (neonate, infant, child/pediatrics, adolescent, adult, geriatric) of patients and to interact with their family members or significant other(s).  Therefore, the employee must demonstrate competence in the interpretation of a patient’s statements or behavior using knowledge of physical, cognitive, emotional and chronological maturation processes.
  • The care of patients should be individualized and should reflect an understanding of the developmental needs of the patient.
  • When circumstances may require care of patients in other age groups, the employee is expected to seek guidance and/or information from his/her supervisor or department head.
  • Performs all aspects of laboratory work including hematology, chemistry, serology, urinalysis, bacteriology, EKG’s, blood gases, etc.
  • May specialize in a certain area of laboratory procedure.
  • May be given responsibility of coordinating and supervising the teaching of Medical Laboratory Technician students.
  • Works in the area of blood banking.
  • Takes emergency call.
  • Performs venipunctures and arterial punctures.
  • Assists with test evaluation programs.
  • Aids in writing laboratory procedure and policy manuals.
  • Insures that survery tests are performed and the results are returned to the appropriate agency.
  • Must be able to operate all laboratory equipment, including microscope, EKG, centrifuges, etc.
  • Must be able to perform preventive maintenance on all instruments.
  • Assists in training new employees.
  • May act as Supervisor in the absence of the Lab Manager and the Assistant Lab Manager, compiling detailed statistical reports, maintaining an adequate departmental Quality Control Program, and reviewing proficiency testing data as necessary; performs the duties of the Lab Manager as assigned.
  • Complies with HIPAA requirements for security and confidentiality.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of BCMH Corporate Compliance plan, Code of Conduct and reporting process of any compliance concerns.
  • Shall be responsible for completing educational requirements.
  • Observes all infection control and safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
