BARAGA COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AWARDED MEDICATION COMPOUNDING CERTIFICATION FROM THE JOINT COMMISSION

July 7, 2017 … Supporting its work to ensure patients receive safe and high quality compounded medications, Baraga County Memorial Hospital (BCMH) has received Medication Compounding Certification from The Joint Commission. The certification, developed based on standards from the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, supports BCMH in complying with standards related to the process, testing and verification of compounded sterile and nonsterile preparations.

Medication compounding is when a licensed pharmacist combines, mixes or alters ingredients to create a prescription medication tailored to the medical needs of a patient. To elevate its medication compounding program, BCMH underwent a rigorous onsite review on May 15, 2017. During the review, Joint Commission experts evaluated and validated compliance with related certification standards as well as with USP General Chapters <795> (non-sterile preparations) and <797> (sterile preparations).

“We are very proud to receive Medication Compounding Certification from The Joint Commission,” said BCMH CEO, Margie Hale. “This achievement demonstrates our commitment to patient safety and quality of care for all patients who receive compounded medications from our hospital. We look forward to continuing to improve upon our medication compounding programs and services.”

“The Joint Commission congratulates BCMH for receiving this important achievement and for demonstrating a commitment to strengthening its medication compounding policies and procedures,” said Patrick Phelan, executive director, Hospital Business Development, The Joint Commission. “Our Medication Compounding Certification program helps hospitals reduce risk and harm for the patients they serve.”

The voluntary certification is awarded for a two-year period to compounding pharmacies operating in or shipping to states with regulations that require compliance with USP General Chapters <795> and/or <797>. For more information, visit The Joint Commission website.
